Volunteer Events

 

The MWCDC hosts a variety of volunteer events throughout the year.  Whether you're interested in cleaning up our streets and parks, planting flowers and trees, or just getting involved in service to your community, we have projects for you.  Below is a list of current events in need of volunteers.

May/June 2011

Volunteers needed: Wild Art Wild Trails Dumpsite Cleanup and Festival
What:
Volunteers needed for the 3rd Annual Wild Art Wild Trails
When: Sunday, June 5
                Cleanup: 9:00-noon; Festival: 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Community Planting Day at Mount Washington/Dilworth Park
What:
Help plant trees and shrubs at the trail entrance

10th Annual Bigbee Planting Day
What: Help plant flowers at Bigbee Field with the Friends of Grandview Park

Spring Redd Up
What:
 Join in the City-wide Spring Redd Up to remove litter on neighborhood streets.
When: Saturday, April 16, 2011
Where: Mount Washington and Dusquense Heights.  Call 412-481-3220 x200 to set up a location near your residence.

 

Community Work Day at Mount Washington/Dilworth Park
What:
Help beautify the trail entrance at Mount Washington/Dilworth Park
When: Saturday, April 16, 2011 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Where: 515 Norton Street, 15211


Trail Work Day in Emerald View Park
In partnership with PTAG 

What: Help build trails in Emerald View Park
           We will provide instruction, tools, water, and snacks.  
           Please wear long pants and sturdy shoes or boots, and bring a lunch. 
When: Saturday, March 26, 2011 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Grandview Avenue Cleanup
What:
Help clean up one of the most beautiful overlooks in Pittsburgh.
When: Saturday, March 26, 2011 9 a.m.-12 noon
Where: Grandview Avenue between Kearsage and Maple Streets

Knit and Crochet Meet-up

What: Join a group of fellow crafters to create trail markers for Emerald View Park
When: Friday, March 25 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Free! No Experience necessary.

Knit Trail Markers Project

Your beautiful Knit Trail Markers are arriving! Keep sending them along!

Volunteer from home and knit or crochet trail markers for Emerald View Park! 

We need knit rectangles that are 10 inches wide and anywhere between 15 and 35 inches long in one of three colors:  Red, Blue, or Yellow.  Please use biodegradable yarn--wool or cotton are best. 

Submissions can be mailed or dropped off at the MWCDC office at 301 Shiloh Street, 15211.

Urban EcoStewards

The perfect opportunity for people interested in caring for their own little piece of park land!  Urban EcoStewards working in Emerald View Park will help remove invasive plant species, pick up litter and other debris, establish native plants, develop habitat for wildlife, and monitor progress at the site over time.  For more information about the EcoSteward program contact our Community Sustainability Coordinator at (412) 481-3220 x200 or khunninen@mwcdc.org 

 

Food Bank Farm Stand

We are still looking for community members from Mount Washington and Duquesne Heights to help staff the Warrington Avenue Farm Stand in 2011.  Work the entire evening, or a part of a shift.  Volunteers needed June through November.

 

Tree Tenders - Tree Pittsburgh Announces 2011 Tree Tender Courses

The Tree Tender Course trains residents in basic tree biology, structure, and function, and teaches you the basics of tree planting and tree care. After completing the course, Tree Tenders work in their communities to plant, care for, and prune young trees with Tree Pittsburgh.

The cost of the course is $40 and includes materials, a meal at each session, and a t-shirt upon completion. A reduced rate option is available for those on a limited income—Visit the Tree Pittsburgh website. Courses fill up fast, so register today!
